Yorktown Virginia: Richmond Virginia Vacation
The Virginia destination of Yorktown is the ideal spot for your July or August family vacation. The area is rich in American history, perfect for the time of year when we celebrate our independence. Tour the battlefields where this freedom was won along with enjoying the great outdoors. History buff or water lover, you’ll find Yorktown to be ideal for a luxury RV experience.
Those of us who love RVing will find that getting to this Virginia destination is an exciting part of the family vacation. Located in the Hampton Roads region near Chesapeake Bay, you’ll have a beautiful drive in from the North or West. Once in the area The Colonial National Parkway offers a scenic drive into Yorktown. Once you arrive, settle into one of the many RV parks such as Miller Melissa’s or Gloucester Point Campground.
Yorktown Virginia has much to see and do. Begin with a stop at the Yorktown Battlefield. They describe themselves as the place to “discover what it took for the United States to be independent.” Start at the visitor center and then move on to the battlefields and historical buildings. Driving and ranger tours are available along with special children’s programs. Don’t forget to take a look at the Moore House where negotiations for Britain’s surrender took place.
The Yorktown Chamber of Commerce says their city is part of “an important national resource known as the Historic Triangle.” The triangle includes Yorktown as well as Jamestown and Williamsburg. At the Yorktown Victory Center you’ll find a living history museum depicting a Continental Army encampment and farm house from the 1780’s. This is a wonderful way to bring the past to life for the whole family.
Yorktown isn’t all about history. The James and York Rivers provide both sporting and sight-seeing activities. Enjoy a trip on the 105 foot tall Schooner Alliance. For a little adventure, book a Schooner Serenity Pirate cruise. The Yorktown River Charter has a variety of river excursions available, everything from a day of fishing to a sunset dinner cruise.
